At the initial stage of Tiktok's launch, it was questioned that it copied Musical.ly. On November 10, 2017, "Toutiao Today" acquired Musical.ly, a music short video social platform in North America, for $1 billion, and merged with Tiktok. On April 10, 2018, Tiktok officially launched its anti addiction system. In January 2019, CCTV announced that Tiktok became the exclusive social media communication platform for the 2019 Spring Festival Gala of China Central Radio and Television Corporation. In January 2020, Volcano Video and Tiktok officially announced the brand integration and upgrading. Volcano Video was renamed Tiktok Volcano Edition, and new icons were used. In January 2021, Tiktok and the CCTV Spring Festival Gala jointly announced that Tiktok became the exclusive red envelope interactive partner of the 2021 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. This is the second time since the 2019 Spring Festival Gala that Tiktok has reached cooperation with CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In June of the same year, Tiktok officially launched a webtest, and its official website was also revised. On December 16 of the same year, Tiktok e-commerce independent APP Tiktok box was officially launched on Android system and ios system. In April 2022, Tiktok announced the rules for optimizing the function of private messages: limit the frequency of strangers' private messages, and strengthen the filtering of content related to online violence. At the end of the month, Tiktok will open the IP address display function. In October of the same year, Tiktok Group launched a new logo and completed the replacement of the account avatar on its Tiktok official account.

In September 2023, Tiktok Group was selected by China's new consumer brand evaluation agency iiMedia Ranking to release the 2023 Top 100 Unicorn Enterprises in China's New Economy, and ranked first with an estimated value of about 2600 billion yuan. In August 2024, Tiktok launched a search independent APP "Tiktok Search", which mainly displays short videos, pictures and texts created by bloggers.
